Steel Guard’s Slag Shield acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets deliver medium-duty protection against sparks, spatter, and medium slag in MIG, TIG, and stick welding applications. The heavy acrylic coating applied over the fiberglass base adds abrasion resistance and improved slag shedding compared to uncoated heat cleaned fiberglass — making Slag Shield the right choice when standard fiberglass isn’t holding up but a full silicone coating isn’t required. Rated to 1,000°F and manufactured from 28 oz heavy acrylic coated fiberglass at .050 inches thick.
Slag Shield blankets are sewn with high-heat thread and include grommets set every 24″ on all sides for secure attachment in horizontal and vertical applications. All blankets meet FM Global and NFPA-701 flame retardancy certifications and are manufactured in the USA. Note — Slag Shield is not suitable for heat treating or stress relief applications. Part of the Steel Guard welding blanket lineup — compare all materials to find the right protection level for your application.
The acrylic coating on Slag Shield blankets provides meaningful performance improvements over uncoated heat cleaned fiberglass in medium-duty welding environments:
Steel Guard manufactures fiberglass welding blankets in multiple weights and coatings. Here’s where Slag Shield fits:
Choose Slag Shield when your application regularly produces medium slag and your 18 oz uncoated blankets are wearing out faster than expected — but you don’t need the full silicone coating of Red Spark.
An acrylic coated fiberglass welding blanket uses a woven fiberglass base with an acrylic compound applied to the surface. The acrylic coating adds abrasion resistance, improves slag shedding, and protects the fiberglass weave from physical wear — providing better performance than uncoated fiberglass in medium-duty welding environments without the cost of a full silicone coating.
Both coatings improve on uncoated fiberglass but differ in performance level and application. Acrylic coated fiberglass (Slag Shield) provides medium-duty abrasion resistance and slag shedding at a lower cost. Silicone coated fiberglass (Red Spark) provides heavier duty abrasion resistance, superior chemical resistance, electrical insulation, and meets military specification Mil-Y-1140C — at a higher price point and longer lead time. Choose acrylic for medium-duty applications and silicone for heavy-duty or mil-spec requirements.
No — Slag Shield acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets are not suitable for heat treating or stress relief applications. The acrylic coating is not designed for the sustained high-temperature exposure required in heat treating. For heat treating applications, our White Spark silica welding blankets with a continuous 1,800°F rating are the appropriate choice.
Slag Shield acrylic coated fiberglass welding blankets are rated to 1,000°F — the same base temperature rating as standard fiberglass. The acrylic coating improves abrasion resistance and slag shedding but does not increase the temperature rating above the fiberglass base material.
Slag Shield 28 oz acrylic coated welding blankets ship in 7–10 business days due to the additional manufacturing steps required for the acrylic coating process. For urgent requirements contact us to discuss availability and expedited options for your order.
