Steel Guard’s White Spark silica welding blankets are engineered from high-purity silica cloth for continuous service in extreme temperature environments where standard fiberglass welding blankets reach their limits. Rated to 1,800°F, White Spark blankets provide reliable protection against heavy sparks, spatter, slag, and radiant heat in foundries, heat treating operations, ovens, and high-temperature industrial welding applications.

Available in 18 oz and 36 oz silica cloth weights, White Spark blankets are sewn with extra high-heat thread for maximum seam integrity at elevated temperatures. All silica welding blankets meet FM Global and NFPA-701 certifications for flame retardancy and are manufactured in the USA. Part of the Steel Guard welding blanket lineup — compare materials to find the right protection level for your application.

White Spark Silica Welding Blanket Specifications

When to Choose Silica Over Fiberglass

Silica welding blankets are the right choice when your application exceeds the temperature or performance limits of standard fiberglass blankets. Key scenarios where White Spark silica cloth outperforms fiberglass:

  • Continuous high-temperature exposure — silica cloth maintains structural integrity at 1,800°F where fiberglass would degrade
  • Foundry and molten metal environments — silica cloth resists the intense radiant heat and slag produced in foundry operations
  • Heat treating applications — White Spark is the recommended choice for heat treating, where blankets must survive repeated thermal cycling
  • Oven and furnace applications — continuous heat exposure that would shorten fiberglass blanket lifespan significantly
  • Heavy slag and spatter — the denser weave of silica cloth provides greater resistance to penetration from heavy weld spatter

White Spark Silica Welding Blanket Applications

  • Foundry heat shielding and molten metal splash protection
  • Heat treating and thermal processing operations
  • Industrial oven and furnace protection barriers
  • High-temperature arc welding and plasma cutting protection
  • Horizontal plane coverage for equipment and surface protection
  • Vertical curtain applications in high-heat environments
  • Pipe and structural steel protection during high-heat operations
  • DIY custom-cut heat barriers using our silica fabric rolls

18 oz vs. 36 oz — Which Weight Do You Need?

White Spark silica welding blankets are available in two weights to match your protection requirements:

  • 18 oz (.030″ thick) — the standard weight for most high-temperature welding and heat treating applications. Lighter and more flexible, making it easier to drape over equipment or use as a curtain. The right choice for most foundry, oven, and heat treating applications.
  • 36 oz (.060″ thick) — double the material density for applications requiring maximum protection against heavy spatter, slag, and radiant heat. Choose 36 oz when 18 oz isn’t providing adequate protection in your environment or when blankets are taking significant physical abuse.

Steel Guard White Spark silica welding blankets are rated for continuous service at 1,800°F. This makes them suitable for foundry work, heat treating, industrial ovens, and high-temperature arc welding and plasma cutting operations where standard fiberglass blankets would degrade prematurely.

Fiberglass welding blankets are suitable for general MIG, TIG, and stick welding spark and spatter protection at standard operating temperatures. Silica welding blankets are engineered for higher continuous temperature exposure — particularly heat treating, foundry work, and furnace applications where fiberglass would reach its performance limits. Silica cloth also provides greater resistance to heavy slag penetration due to its denser weave.

Yes — all Steel Guard White Spark silica welding blankets meet FM Global and NFPA-701 certifications for flame retardancy. These are the primary fire safety standards required for industrial welding protection products in manufacturing and fabrication facilities.

Yes — Steel Guard silica fabric is also available in roll form for custom-cut DIY applications. Rolls are ideal for facilities that need to cut heat barriers to specific dimensions or want to keep replacement material on hand. See our welding blanket rolls for available roll configurations.

This refers to the finished sewn dimensions of the blanket. The hem and edge finishing process reduces the final blanket size by approximately 2–4 inches from the nominal ordered dimension. This is normal for sewn industrial blankets — factor this into your size selection when ordering for a specific coverage area.
