Battery Inventory and Charging Area Containment — Manufactured in the U.S.A.

Lithium-ion cells fail without warning. A damaged, defective, or overcharged battery enters thermal runaway — a self-sustaining reaction that produces its own oxygen, resists conventional extinguishing agents, releases toxic gas, and can reignite hours after the visible flames stop. In a warehouse, that failure is rarely isolated: it happens on a charging bench, inside a pallet of returned stock, or in a rack of powered tools, with combustible inventory on every side.

The Steel Guard Lithium Battery Fire Blanket is built to contain that event. Deployed over the source, it stops fire spread, blocks radiant heat from reaching adjacent stock and racking, and controls smoke until the cells burn out or responders can flood them. It is cut and sewn in our South Holland, Illinois plant from Draft-Tex™ fabric, built on Newtex Z-Block® silicone-coated fiberglass, and constructed to the design and test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 — the European technical specification for lithium-ion fire blankets. Part of our battery fire protection line.

Temperature Performance

Fire blanket temperature claims are not comparable unless you know which number you are reading. We publish both, and recommend you ask every supplier for the same two:

  • 1,800°F (982°C) continuous — the sustained working rating of the Draft-Tex™ fabric
  • 2,700°F intermittent — short-duration flash exposure
  • Thermal test basis: benchmarked to the DIN SPEC 91489 cycle — direct flame to 1,832°F (1,000°C), cycling for 23 minutes

Reusable Construction

Much of what is sold in this category is a thin single-use drape — roughly 480 g/m² of lightweight coated glass, often rated near 1,000°F, intended to be discarded after one deployment. Steel Guard blankets are heavy-duty reusable construction. Deploy them in drills, train your team, inspect them, clean off contamination, refold, and return them to service throughout their life. A blanket is retired only after exposure to an actual fire, because the coating in the contact zone sacrifices itself to protect the glass beneath — which is how the product is designed to perform. Across a facility’s lifetime, one reusable blanket replaces a stack of disposables.

Deployment

Every deployment loop is red for identification in heavy smoke. Corner loops are supplemented with side-edge loops as size increases, so no grab point is more than about six feet apart, and each loop is a 2-inch reinforced strap on a backed doubler built to a 125 kg (275 lb) shock load. Deployment is a controlled drag — two people take the leading corners and pull the blanket over the source while side crews walk alongside, so nobody reaches across the leading edge.

Sizing

A containment blanket must cover the burning object completely and lie flat on the ground at least 20 inches (0.5 m) beyond it on every side — that ground overlap is what starves the fire and blocks radiant heat. Measure the largest item you need to protect, add roughly 40 inches to each dimension, and round up. Standard sizes run from device and bench scale through full pallet and equipment coverage, and because we are the manufacturer, any dimension in between or beyond is built to order.

Manufactured in the U.S.A. — Built to Order

Imported fire blankets are stocked in limited quantities in the United States, with backorders on common sizes running as long as three months. Because we manufacture domestically, production runs — including fleet, multi-site, and distributor quantities — are produced in two to three weeks. There is no container, no customs, and no queue. We also offer private label and OEM programs for distributors who want their own branding, which no importer in this category can provide.

Documentation

Every blanket is serialized and supplied with a product identification record, laminated deployment card, safety and use information, and an inspection and service log — the documentation your customers’ insurers, EHS programs, and fire marshals ask for.

Steel Guard fire blankets are constructed to the design and test parameters of DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11. They are not third-party certified to that specification, and we do not represent them as certified, compliant, or approved under it. No equivalent U.S. standard currently exists for these products. This product limits the spread of fire, smoke, and heat; it does not extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire. Always contact emergency services first.

Ours are. In normal service — drills, training, inspection, and handling — the blanket is cleaned and returned to service throughout its life. It is retired only after exposure to an actual fire. Many blankets sold in the U.S. are single-use drapes, so confirm before comparing products.

No. A lithium-ion cell in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and can continue burning beneath the blanket. The blanket contains the event — stopping fire spread, blocking radiant heat, and controlling smoke until the cells burn out or responders can cool them. Always contact emergency services first.

1,800°F (982°C) continuous and 2,700°F intermittent, with construction benchmarked to the DIN SPEC 91489 thermal cycle of up to 1,832°F (1,000°C) for 23 minutes. Ask any supplier for both a continuous rating and a test duration.

Measure the largest object you need to cover, add approximately 40 inches to each dimension for ground overlap, and round up. If you land between sizes, we build to your dimensions.

Yes. We support stocking distributors with volume pricing, drop shipping, and literature, and we offer private label and OEM programs with your branding.

Yes. We are the manufacturer. Any width and length is built to order in two to three weeks using the same construction and materials.

1. ALERT — Call emergency services. Alert personnel. Do not approach if flames are venting forcefully.
2. OPEN — Remove the blanket from its bag, box, or wall case. Grip the RED loops; every deployment loop is red.
3. POSITION — Two people take the leading corners. Approach from upwind, keep low, and never reach across the leading edge.
4. COVER — Drag the blanket fully over the source with side crews walking alongside. Cover completely, with the fabric flat on the ground at least 20 in (0.5 m) on all sides.
5. RETREAT AND MONITOR — Move back. Batteries can reignite for hours. Monitor from a distance until emergency services take over. Do not lift the blanket to check.
